Sleep Like a Tiger
Bibliographic Information: Logue, M. & Zagarenski, P. (2012). Sleep like a tiger. New York, NY: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company.
Genre/Type: Fiction picture book
Summary: This book is about a little girl who does not want to go to sleep. She tells her parents she is not tired, and they tell her that's fine, but to get ready for bed. The little girl does this and gets into her bed and asks her parents if everything in the world goes to sleep. Her parents tell her that yes, the dog is sleeping and the cat is sleeping. The little girl asks about other animals: bats, whales, snails, and bears, and her parents explain when and how these animals all sleep. The little girl then adds that the tiger sleeps to stay strong. She then falls asleep using the techniques of the aforementioned animals and ends up sleeping like the tiger.
Theme/Purpose: The purpose of this book is to point out to children that sleep is important; all animals do it! Sleep is important in order for individuals to stay strong. This book would be good for parents to read to uncooperative kids who do not want to sleep, as well as for learning interesting facts about animals.
Selection/Evaluation: This book points out the need all animals have for sleep. It also draws on how animals use some of their characteristics. For example, the snail uses his shell to sleep in and the bat uses his wings to wrap himself up in order to sleep. I chose this book because it tells the reader a snippet of information about various animals and points out that everything needs sleep.
