Bibliographic Information: London, J. & Spirin, I. (2012). Little lost tiger. Tarrytown, NY: Marshall Cavendish Corporation.

Genre/Type: Fiction picture book

Summary: This book is about a mother tiger and her cub, Amba. Amba is hungry, so the mother tiger must hunt so Amba can have food to survive. The mother tiger uses her scent and sharp claws to mark her territory and softly follows a group of sika deer through the forest. To ensure Amba doesn't scare the deer away while she hunts, she sticks him under a fallen tree to wait. Just as the mother tiger is about to pounce, a huge fire starts in the forest. This scares the deer, as well as many other animals, and leads to the mother tiger searching for her cub. When the mother returns to the fallen tree, Amba is nowhere to be found. The next morning after the fire has died out, the mother tiger goes out searching for Amba and finds that he was hiding in a cave. There is an informative note by the author at the end of the book, which goes in-depth, providing further information on the Siberian tiger and the threat of extinction.

Theme/Purpose: The purpose of this book is to show the reader some of the challenges the Siberian tiger faces, as well as provide a glimpse into its everyday survival. The author works to inform the reader about this intriguing animal in an effort to advocate for its survival.

Selection/Evaluation: I chose this book because within it the author emphasizes the needs animals have for food. The whole reason Amba was placed hidden away from his mother was so she could hunt and find him food. This book also draws on a variety of characteristics of the Siberian tiger: sharp claws, striped, stealthy, special scent, etc. The need for protection is also pointed out, in that the mother tiger must provide and care for the cub in order for him to survive. Shelter, seen in the form of a cave is also present, reaffirming this need for animals.
